The Otsutsuki clan can use a certain shinjutsu to cheat death.
This involves making a data copy of themselves, compressing it into a Karma and implanting it into an individual.
This essentially serves as an "Otsutsuki backup file", and those who bear a Karma are known as "vessels".
In order to protect its vessel, the Karma also grants enhanced combat abilities and power.
