Friends and Future Confidants: Shisui Meets Itachi
Shisui and Itachi first meet when they are both young.
Over time, the two become best friends, with Itachi looking up to Shisui like an older brother.

Shisui and Itachi often train together, seeming to find many chances for conversation as well.

It could very well be thanks to Shisui's influence that Itachi decides he wants to become Hokage and develops his own idea of what it means to shoulder that role.
Valor and Fame: "Shisui the Teleporter"
Many shinobi use teleportation jutsu, but Shisui is particularly skilled at this art and becomes feared by the ninja of other lands as "Shisui the Teleporter"!
His power is such that the Kirigakure ninja Ao still clearly recognizes Shisui's chakra—even over ten years after their wartime encounter—and says to himself, "He was a formidable foe that I fought against once... I'll never forget his color!"
Shisui's nickname also spreads quite far, as demonstrated by how Kumogakure's Killer Bee recalls it instantly after hearing the Uchiha's name mentioned and asks: "You name checking the Uchiha's most powerful genjutsu user, Shisui the Teleporter?"
Shisui's rise to fame occurs in a period when Konoha is not only recovering from the Third Great Ninja War, but also reeling from the loss of military strength caused by the Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze's death during the Nine Tails' attack and the departure of the Legendary Three: Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade.
This creates a backdrop against which Shisui may be seen as a rising star capable of supporting the Hidden Leaf in the future.

Shisui's Ultimate Genjutsu: Koto Amatsukami
It's safe to say that while Shisui is famous for his teleportation skills, the Koto Amatsukami genjutsu he can use with his Mangekyo Sharingan earns him equal renown.
Shisui's Koto Amatsukami is a peerless genjutsu that manipulates those it's cast on without them realizing that anything is amiss!
That may seem par for the course with genjutsu, but what makes Shisui's so formidable is how it essentially overwrites the thoughts and intentions of its target, creating a phantom experience that makes it as if their actions flow naturally from their own will.

Unfortunately, the incredible genjutsu that spreads Shisui's name across the lands also plays a large part in the tragedy that befalls him...
Entrusting the Future: "Shisui the Teleporter" Departs
Shisui and Itachi work desperately to stop the coup d'état planned by the Uchiha clan, but the situation turns grim when Danzo steals Shisui's right eye. Left with no other way to avoid the worst-case scenario he fears, Shisui entrusts his remaining eye to Itachi, along with the future of their clan and village.
"...YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE I CAN COUNT ON, MY TRUE BEST FRIEND.
PLEASE PROTECT THIS VILLAGE...AND THE UCHIHA NAME...BOTH."
Shisui's sacrifice also gives his comrade one more thing—
—Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan, which awakens due to his best friend's death.
Itachi makes use of that power on the tragic night when he carries out his plan to prevent the Uchiha coup d'état.

Years later, Shisui's left eye passes to Naruto via Itachi.
The Koto Amatsukami jutsu within the eye even ends up saving Itachi himself when he's being controlled by the Reanimation Jutsu, allowing him to defeat the jutsu's caster and turn the tides of the Fourth Great Ninja War!
And so, Shisui's legacy lives on long after his death, protecting the Hidden Leaf Village and the entire ninja world.
